Good Jobs and the Economy

We must have real long term economic stimulus that creates jobs building America and restores our nation’s competitiveness in the global economy. By building America, America’s workers can build stronger, healthier and better lives for themselves and their families. With a recession threatening in many areas of the country, getting our economy back on track by creating good jobs is more important than ever.

Our priority for public funding must be that any jobs created are an investment in American workers. For every billion dollars in federal infrastructure investment – in America’s basics -48,000 good jobs can be created.

Creating Good Jobs by Taking Care of the Basics

Let’s get our priorities straight – infrastructure investment in America's bridges, highways, and public schools will generate an estimated 47,500 jobs for every billion dollars invested. Due to neglect needs now are estimated at $1.6 trillion – an enormous sum, but less than current tax breaks for the rich or a misguided foreign policy.

Green Jobs

There is a tremendous potential to create good construction jobs, also known as green jobs, in energy efficiency, wind energy development, and biofuel development. LIUNA has partnered with the Apollo Alliance in calling for investment in green jobs and energy for the future. Training programs are needed to develop skills in the installation of energy efficient building features. Thousands of green construction jobs can be created by retro-fitting municipal buildings across the U.S. for greater energy efficiency.
