Get Ready: Major Attacks on Good Jobs Coming in 2011

Corporate interests spent hundreds of millions of dollars in 2010 to elect anti-worker officials in states across the U.S. and they are expecting payback with passage of laws that will destroy good jobs. LIUNA’s Build America activists will be on the frontlines of fighting back.

In several states—including Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and Missouri—they’ll try to pass so-called “right to work” laws, which weaken unions and would cost the typical worker more than $5,000 a year in pay, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. They’ll also try to ban family-supporting prevailing wage laws and project labor agreements, which prevent contractors from low-balling wages in order to get government work.

Through the Build America campaign and by working with the AFL-CIO, LIUNA activists will fight against these attacks and seek legislation that creates—rather than destroys—good jobs. In Congress, the voice of LIUNA members will be crucial in finally winning investment in our nation’s highways, bridges, transit systems and water resources, all of which have fallen into decline—and which if repaired, would create millions of good jobs and leave behind real assets for taxpayers.

Look for your call to take up the fight in 2011 with appeals for phone-banking, letter-writing, outreach to fellow members, and more.
