LIUNA on the Reported Move Away from Taxing Health Care Benefits

Washington, D.C. (July 9, 2009) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA, made the following statement today on the reported move away from a U.S. Senate proposal to tax workers’ health care benefits:

Working men and women feel some reassurance that the U.S. Senate appears to be moving away from a proposal that would tax workers’ health care benefits – both because they already struggle with escalating health care costs and because such a tax would doom the chances for urgently-needed health care reform.

In the last two weeks, thousands of LIUNA members have personally called Senators to speak out against a health care benefits tax. In addition, LIUNA launched television and radio ads opposing the tax in Montana, North Dakota and Iowa.

We are proud of the continuing efforts of LIUNA members, who are standing up for themselves and the 70 percent of the American public which opposes a health care benefits tax. We look forward to continuing to help lead the discussion on health care reform that benefits all working people.
