11/6/09 LIUNA Today’s unemployment report confirmed that in the U.S. job market, the hardest hit sector continues to be the construction industry, a key driver of our economy. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction unemployment rose from 17.1 percent in September to 18.7 percent in October. That reflects the loss of 62,000 construction jobs in one month, bringing to more than 1.6 million the number of construction jobs lost since the recession began.

11/5/09 LIUNA Seattle, WA – LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America –
today graduated the first class of skilled weatherization workers to complete a weatherization training program in the Seattle area. The 19 new graduates completed a challenging two-week training program where they learned general construction skills in addition to core weatherization competencies, such as caulking, insulating and duct sealing.

A representative from Jetstream Construction attended the graduation ceremony and presented the newly certified weatherization workers with job offers.

10/29/09 LIUNA LIUNA – one of the nation’s largest unions of construction workers – backed significantly increased investment in residential weatherization during a U.S. Senate hearing today on the Clean Energy Jobs and America Power Act.
“Weatherizing homes, which account for 22 percent of America’s energy consumption, can reduce our dependence on foreign oil and create hundreds of thousands of family-supporting jobs,” Dave Johnson, LIUNA’s Eastern Region Organizing Director, said in testimony before the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

On National Weatherization Day, created by the U.S. Department of Energy, cities will be hosting events to highlight services and organizations that help people to make their homes more energy efficient. Across the country, federal recovery funds are helping people weatherize their homes for winter, creating jobs, and reducing energy waste.
